How to Reply to Reddit Leads Without Getting Banned

Finding the right post is only half the battle. The reply is where conversions happen — and where most founders make costly mistakes.

The cardinal rule

Reddit users spot promotional intent immediately. If your first sentence is about your product, you will get downvoted and potentially banned from the subreddit. The rule is: give genuine value first, always.

What gets you banned vs. what converts

❌ The promotional reply

Hey! Check out LeadRadar — it does exactly what you're looking for. We have a free trial at leadradar.dev. 🚀

Opens with a product pitch. No value given. Looks exactly like spam.

❌ The drive-by link drop

I built something for this: leadradar.dev

Zero context, zero value, zero reason for the reader to click.

✓ The value-first reply

The main thing that helps at this stage is getting alerts fast — Reddit threads die within 6 hours, so if you're checking manually you'll always be late. A few people use F5Bot which is free and simple, but it sends you everything without filtering by intent. I actually built a tool (LeadRadar) specifically to solve the filtering problem — happy to share early access if you want to try it.

Addresses their actual problem first. Acknowledges alternatives. Introduces product naturally in context.

Account karma matters

Most subreddits require a minimum karma threshold to post or comment. If your account is new, invest 2–3 weeks genuinely contributing to communities before promoting anything. Upvote quality content, answer questions you know well.

The minimum viable karma for most B2B subreddits is 50–100 comment karma. Some (r/entrepreneur, r/startups) require more.

The 10:1 ratio

For every reply where you mention your product, make 10 replies where you help without mentioning it at all. This builds genuine reputation and ensures moderators see you as a contributor, not a spammer.

LeadRadar's AI reply suggestions are designed with this in mind — they start with genuine value and introduce your product only when it's directly relevant to the post.
